Where anagrams turn up
Cryptic crosswords. Words like "broken", "confused", "wild" or "sort of" signal that nearby letters are an anagram of the answer. Count the letters, paste them here, and check the result against the definition half of the clue. For regular clues, use the crossword solver.
Word games. Finding a seven-letter anagram of your Scrabble rack is a bingo worth 50 extra points; the Scrabble word finder ranks those by score.
Pen names and puzzles. Novelists and puzzle setters have long hidden names in anagrams. "Tom Marvolo Riddle" becoming "I am Lord Voldemort" in Harry Potter is the one most readers know.
Keys make it quick: grouping a 270,000-word dictionary by key produces families like ALERT / ALTER / LATER, and the longest single-word families in English run to a dozen or more members.

What is an anagram?
An anagram rearranges every letter of a word or phrase, using each exactly once, to make a new word or phrase. LISTEN → SILENT and DORMITORY → DIRTY ROOM are classic examples.
What is the difference between an anagram and an unscramble?
An anagram must use all the letters. An unscrambler also shows shorter words that use only some of them. Use this page for exact rearrangements, and the word unscrambler for everything smaller.
Can it find two-word anagrams?
Yes. After single-word anagrams it searches for pairs of everyday words that together use every letter — useful for cryptic crosswords and name anagrams. It caps the search at 16 letters to stay fast on a phone.
Why do some anagrams look unfamiliar?
Single-word results come from a 269,870-word game dictionary, so rare but valid words appear in grey. Two-word results use only common English words, so they read like real phrases.
Are spaces and punctuation ignored?
Yes. Only the letters A–Z count, so you can paste a name or a whole phrase.
